Diary of MTV's ‘MADE’ Makeover

In a behind-the-scenes Pageantry exclusive, Miss Galaxy ’04 Gina Ferrer (below left) reveals her challenge in turning Catherine "Kitty" Oler (below right), an unpolished Texas teen into an overnight pageant beauty success for the MTV hit series 'MADE'.

By Gina Ferrer

Jan. 23 Today I surprised Kitty in front of her Judson High School classmates with two dozen red roses while everything was captured on video by the MTV 'MADE' production crew. Sizing Kitty up, I could see she is a smart girl, a self-professed geek. She wore glasses, no makeup, a baggy tie-dyed T-shirt, baggy jeans, tennis shoes, and pigtails. She was constantly giggling and rambling as she spoke, and when she walked she hunched over. Wow! But she is tall and slender, and has pretty eyes and a good facial structure. The physical transformation shouldn’t be as difficult as the personal one, but I knew I had my makeover work cut out for me.

Jan. 24 Today I met Kitty’s family, and checked out her bedroom and her closet. She is totally into collecting sci-fi and fantasy cartoons and images of cows! The clothes she owns look like maternity wear, and she has only three pairs of shoes! Things will need to change if she wants to win her high-school pageant. For homework, I gave her a tote bag with her pageant notebook and copies of Pageantry magazine, explaining that she needed to read all of the magazines and make notes, dog-ear pages, get an idea of the dresses she liked, and totally immerse herself in the pageant world. She was so excited to be featured on MTV's 'MADE' makeover! Later, we met for our first interview training session...
